Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hazard lights continually coming on?`

    Hi all,

Having a problem with our '12 Multivan 100kw recently with the hazard lights coming on randomly while driving. It appears to happen more often when going over bumps. I don't think it's the switch itself - banging the dash in the vicinity of the switch does nothing.

Is it possible to pull a fuse to take out the hazards until VW can have a look at it (about 2 weeks wait)?

    Cheers,

    Tim

no fuse as such to pull as the hazards run through the central electrics control unit....if the switch is remove with the ignition on then its fail safe is to put the hazard lights on....possible switch fault internally or a loose pin / terminal....VDUB...

The hazard lights can come on if you brake hard. What might be happening is the accelerometer that is used is triggering this. It may be a faulty accelerometer or switch associated with it.

You would have to check the wiring diagram before pulling a fuse, however if you try it and something odd happens, you could re-fit the fuse.

        Hey Gents,

Thanks for the suggestions, but it appeared to be caused by a shorting in the loom. The dealer discovered (after dismantling the dash) that the loom had worn through in one spot and it was in direct contact with the steelwork under the dash.... Going over bumps set it off because the live wire was bouncing on the earth....

        Cheers,

        Tim

I would have thought that a fuse would blow in the event of a short ?? goes to show that all this smart technology is sometimes not that reliable . As has been reported the Can Bus system is supposed to help the dealers trace a problem but apparently if there is a problem the Can Bus control is supposed to shut off power to the problem and each time you start the van the system looks at the circuits to see if the problem is fixed if not its shut down time again . Sorry us old guys just don't like this new fangled stuff .

its not a short though, it uses an earth as trigger, so in theory the wire was just being triggered by the wrong earth (the metal in dash)
